"Since the building of the New ..."

About: Addenbrooke's Hospital

(as the patient),

What could be improved

Since the building of the New Addenbrookes Hospital, the Outpatients, and in particular, I refer to what is now the Rehabilitation Clinic 9, has had inadequate parking for the disabled patient.

I have been a patient at Addenbrookes since around 1949. I have been overseas since 1987 and returned in May 2008. The parking has not improved in 20 odd years for us.

Surely, being Outpatients, we should have adequate parking / carpark, with a lift, close by and a covered walkway linking the buildings.

It is too far for me too walk, other than a short distance, and fear of slippery conditions and bad weather are a continual concern. If I cancel an appointment due to the inability to get to the Clinic, I feel it is the hospital's responsibility.

Also, we have an aging population which is putting greater strain on available places.

Is this being considered?

Can the Outpatients be moved next to a carpark with disabled parking places, or could a car park be built next to the existing Outpatients?

We are outpatients.

Anything else?

I would like to hear that this is being considered.

Thank you

We are sorry to read that you feel there have been insufficient improvements to the on site parking facilities over the last 20 years. In recent years, the Trust has made many improvements to the on site parking facilities.

With nearly 12,000 visitors and patients arriving on the site daily, with 90% arriving by car, the original infrastructure of the site had not allowed for this growth and so to accommodate for the changes in parking needs a second multi-storey car park was opened in April 2008. The new car park has been built on the site of one of our original surface car parks and has given the Trust the extra capacity to park patients and visitors, with an extra 63 spaces available for disabled drivers within the car park. The Trust has also introduced an on site courtesy bus providing a free service from the Main Hospital car park to all the main entrances on site. The bus seats up to eight people or six plus wheelchair users.

We have also provided an extra 20 disabled spaces adjacent to the bus station and another 23 spaces at the rear of the Concourse and Main Entrance to the Addenbrooke's Treatment Centre.

There are still around 150 disabled bays in total scattered around the site for disabled users adjacent to the buildings and we will look to increase these bays wherever possible. The Trust is continuously working with patient groups to ensure that we continue to improve the on site parking facilities.
