After being messed about by my local "ophthalmic specialist" unit, I decided to give Moorfields A&E a call - this was Thursday evening. "Come in 08:30 tomorrow to A&E" they said - I work about a mile away, so saw them first thing. Excellent attention to detail - I went all the way up the chain until I saw a consultant who I knew by reputation to be one of the best in Europe - "What are you doing this afternoon?" he asked - "Going back to work" I replied"... "Not so" he said - "you're in surgery at 14:30 - we don't like to let people go until they're sorted". I left later that day with my left eye repaired (partial retinal detachment) - no problems since. Being able to essentially walk in off the street to one of the top, if not the top, eye hospital in Europe and be seen by one of the best consultants, operated on and be able to go home all in the same day with no charge is a testament to the NHS.
"Sight-saver..."
