"Hospital was easy to get to!"

(as a relative),

What I liked

Hospital was easy to get to!

What could be improved

My father was in the elderly care section after a fall. Nurses appeared to be doing their duties but they showed very little empathy, compassion or respect for their elderly customers. They said they weren't allowed to lift patients so they were left to hang out of bed or in my father's case left laying down whilst they served him his tea. Have you every tried to eat soup and drink tea laying down? He needed his top changing after his meal but it was left to me to do it. They were supposed to rub his feet with ointment but it was left to me. He dropped his sandwiches on the floor (in a plastic box) but nobody replaced them for him so he couldn't eat his tea. One patient was shouting for the nurse because he had to go to the toilet when she did take notice she said she was too busy and left the man to soil himself whilst I was there, where is the diginity in that? I also asked if I could attend visiting 30 mins early due to work commitments giving me about 1hr with my father. I had to ask three staff nurses in total all who made me feel like I was going to the headmistress' office!! They allowed it once but told me whilst I was there I wasn't to "harass" them. I understand rules and regulations need adhering to but where has the caring side of this profession gone. I am sure there are nurses out there who do a sterling job and would not wish to paint them all with the same brush but I felt some of the nurses I have met recently would be better suited to another profession.

Anything else?

I was sadened and disappointed in what I experienced.

I am sorry you feel we let your father down when he was a patient in our elderly care ward. We are concerned about your comments and wonder if you would like to talk to someone who can help to address your concerns. If you would like to do so please ring our patient advice and liaison service on 0800 092 0084. Thank you for taking the time to leave your comments on NHS Choices.
