"Cardiology - lack of dignity and empathy"

About: Queen's Hospital (Romford)

I recently attended the cardiogy dept with my 89 year old mother to hear results of recent ECGs. The doctor who gave my mother her results was offhand, and perfunctory. He failed to take into account the fact that my mother wears 2 hearing aids, and could not hear him very well. He fired questions at her, then when she took time to answer, he talked over her and asked her another question. When I asked him if the operation she will need is serious, he said without any emotion (apart from irritation), 'It's open heart surgery, of course it's serious'. My Mum came out of the appointment feeling like a number, not a human being, and she told me she was made to feel she was just a nuisance, and should stop bothering the NHS. After he gave her this upsetting news, he then took her blood pressure and said it was elevated. This is hardly surprising, given the treatment she had been subjected to. There was a total lack of respect and dignity about the whole process, apart from the nursing staff who were helpful.

Thank you for your feedback. I am very sorry to hear that your mother feels that she has been treated with a lack of respect and dignity. To investigate this further I will require some more information from you. Please contact me through our PALS team on 01708 435 454 or email PALS@bhrhospitals.nhs.uk with more details. Yours sincerely, Stephen Burgess Medical Director
