I arrived at Southmead with my wife who has cancer, 15 minutes early at 0945. After two fruitless turns around the multi storey car park I had to drop my wife off at Haematology so she could attend at her appointment time, then went back to the multi storey, without finding anywhere, so I went to the so-called main car park -- full, of course. Then went to the parking office to renew the car pass for my wife (cancer sufferers have a complimentary pass) and had to wait 12 minutes to be seen, then went back to the multi storey for a fourth time, still full so made a second visit to the main car park, but the parking office had said I could use the Patient Drop Off park and ignore the 20 minutes limit. I tried it and it was full -- there was a surprise. I made a tour of the whole site, without success, so I made one last despairing visit to the drop off point and parked on a partially blacked out disabled space. When I finally joined my wife in Haematology I had been driving round for 50 minutes! If this is the best they can do even before the new buildings are open and before any patients are transferred from Frenchay, then this new edifice will be a failure. Can you credit it -- a failure even before it has opened! All the wonderful operating theatres (so we have heard about), the state of the art wards, well equipped laboratories and other facilities will all be useless if the patients can't get to them because all the over paid failures who were involved with planning, funding and commissioning haven't put in enough car parking spaces. And don't tell me my wife has to go by bus, because it is a two hour ride with a change from Chipping Sodbury, her cancer has badly damaged her immune system and she must not be near anyone who has the slightest cold or infection. So, what are you going to do to ensure I can find a parking space when I have to come to your white elephant again at the end of April?
