I recently went to ward 209 for what should have been a routine day case operation for fibroid removal. However I did have to do my own research before hand as I was given the wrong leaflet. I opted for a spinal block for the procedure so I could go home later that day. Everything was explained well, although waiting in the day room for my turn was boring and cold, I recommend magazines and/or a tv in the room to help time pass. Unfortunately during the operation the consultant perforated my womb! I have read up since that this is very rare (1-2 people in 1000 have had this problem) I was warned of the possible complications before hand but the consultant told me it never happens. I do understand that mistakes happen but the aftercare has been appalling. I was discharged with no advice of a recovery period, how to treat my stitches or what to expect. The only thing I was told was that I would no longer be able to have a natural birth but according to the consultant 'it's fashionable now for people to have cesareans' not the answer I was looking for! I have been left feeling confused and unsure about my future, I have so many questions and was never given the opportunity to ask. I wish I'd received better care.
