"Long wait at pathology dept"

About: Christchurch Hospital Royal Bournemouth General Hospital / Clinical haematology

(as a service user),

My wife had a two hour wait and was still not seen. With seven rooms operating, it should be the norm to have your number called within 10 to 15 minutes. Why did she have to wait so long? Fast track in that time was only four.

We feel this is an utter shambles, and that it can only be explained by awful management. In comparison, we have found that Christchurch hospital runs an excellent system for taking blood.

It's no good putting red signs up and not giving a reasonable service, of course people will moan. If the management cannot cope in running this department, then resign.

Response from Sue Mellor, Patient Experience Lead, Royal Bournemouth & Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Dear “frogspawn100”

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience of the Pathology Department with us and I am sorry to hear your wife had such a long wait.

I have spoken with the pathology department who unfortunately have had some staff sickness which may account for some of the delay you experienced. However due to patient demand this trust remains the only local trust to have an open pathology department allowing patients to ‘drop in’ without an appointment.

This does mean that demand can sometimes overstretch the department’s resources leading to delays but the majority of patients have expressed a preference not to have an appointment system implemented.

The department is constantly reviewing its processes and currently looking at the possibility of holding community clinics within GP Practices to reduce demand on the hospital phlebotomy service.

Once again thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback
