"Still waiting for a bed for my elderly father"

About: NHS Tayside

(as a relative),

My elderly father was in hospital. He was no longer able to be on his own, so he is now living with me. At the Care Mtg, prior to his being discharged, we were offered a hospital bed and table and a commode to be installed in my house before he was discharged.

After a week - 10 days, this had not happened and so I brought him home and he slept in my bed and I slept on the couch. He has now been home 10 days and still no bed although the commode has been delivered. Had to go and buy a bed (Can ill afford) as cannot sleep on sofa any longer. (Lack of sleep and not comfortable and then dealing with dad's needs too much strain on my own health).

On speaking with the District Nursing staff regarding this, I was told that they require at least 1 months notice to provide a bed and that at the moment there was a waiting list of 11 people and dad is not the first.

At the time of writing, this bed wait time would be another month at least. Why offer a bed and not inform us that there was this length of time to wait? I am absolutely disgusted at this and dad would certainly have been left in hospital until one had been supplied, I had not offered to sleep on the couch for a few days. We would not have done this if I known it would have been weeks!

Dear graudy,

I am sorry your father did not receive the equipment he required to make the transition from hospital to home a positive experience and that this has also impacted on your own health.

As a health board we work across four Community Health Partnerships (CHPs) and my understanding of the process for hospital beds is that it is different in each of the CHPs. Without further information I cannot comment on this specific case, however I would like to ensure that your father receives the equipment he requires as promptly as possible.

If you could contact Alison Moss our complaints and feedback team lead by emailing feedback.tayside@nhs.net she will be able to look into this matter further for you.

Kind regards

Caroline McQuillian

Associate Nurse Director
