"My feedback about Highbury Hospital"

About: Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust / Inpatient mental health care

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

Some patients are very noisy. This makes me feel quite frightened. I don't really always feel safe on the ward.

There is only one wheelchair on my ward, and you have to have had a medical to say you can use it but sometimes you need it. We need more wheelchairs.

I'd really like it if we could get out of the hospital more, on day trips or something. It's really good for your health to be out and about. There needs to be more staff to take patients out. I don't think clinical staff should be doing this.

I would also like to get home more.

I have had some staff talk to me sharply. I would like to be free to talk to the doctor whenever I feel I need to.

Response from Jo Horsley, Adult Mental Health Service Manager - Acute services, Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust

Hi Amy Jayne,

You raise a lot of important points in your posting and I will make sure all ward managers are made aware of your comments. I urge you to speak to your primary nurse or nurse in change if you don’t feel safe as its vey important to your recovery that you feel safe and well cared for. I will speak to the modern matron about the wheelchair issue. I’m really pleased to advise you that we have recently employed some new peer support workers at Highbury to assist patients and part of their role will be working with patients to get out and about. As you rightly say this is very important for health, well being and recovery. Ask you ward to introduce you to the new staff, there is also some new staff working on the maples with the OT's. If you pop along to one of their groups you might meet other people who feel similar to yourself

Best wishes

Jo Horsley
