About: Southend Hospital

I had my annual eye examination at the Southend eye unit on Friday 28th March & as usual was dealt with with care, consideration and professionalism. I have no complaint whatsoever about the medical care I have received over the years at Southend Hospital. I would however draw your attention to the patient waiting facilities at the eye unit which I feel are a little dated & claustrophobic. On Friday afternoon it was very busy but there seemed to be a problem with the nurses calling patients and not using the PA system. A number of people were complaining they could not hear their names called and I was one of them particularly if a nurse had a strong accent or a subdued voice. I cannot understand why they are not using the PA system. I did note that there is an electronic numbering system (where patients are given numbered tickets) next to the receptionists desk but that is not working. Oh and incidentally the vending machine and water fountain had run out of paper cups! Minor issues I know but attention to these details would positively add to the patient experience. I trust these comments are helpful. Best regards.

Many thanks for your comments about the Eye Unit. We agree that the waiting facilities are no longer fit for purpose and we are embarking on a refurbishment of the Eye Unit's outpatient department and I hope that you will see an improvement in the near future. I will pass your comments to the team who will be happy to receive them.

Best wishes
