"Refused to see a 14mth baby."

About: St Albans City Hospital

How sad that my 14mth granddaughter has been turned away as my daughter had not made an appointment ! we thought this was a A&E . When they arrived this afternoon with a suspect meningtis rash over my granddaughters body we were told we had to ring 111 first to see a doctor, how frustrating when one was sitting not more than 10ft away with no appointments for over an hour ! What's happened in this day and age . We had to go back home and wait for a doctor to say we can go back .We then had a phone call at 4.15 to say we could be seen at Hemel Hempstead for 4.30 , when we said we where worried we would not make it in time the receptionist rudely said "we were not that bothered then" how rude and frustrating to think we were standing in front of a doctor only to be turned away when the place was empty ! no wonder the health system is on its knees when its run by idiots.

Response from St Albans City Hospital

Thank you for taking the time to let us have feedback. I am sorry to hear your granddaughter was unwell. I hope she is better now. The minor injuries unit (MIU) at St Albans Hospital is a walk-in service and does not require patients to book. As such, I am concerned that you were asked to book an appointment. My assumption is that you were actually visiting the GP out-of-hours service, which is run by Herts Urgent Care (and not our organisation), but is within the MIU (on the St Albans Hospital site). With this in mind, I would ask you to contact our patient advice and liaison service (PALS) so that they can investigate what happened and establish exactly what service you were using. They will also be able to help you raise your concerns with Herts Urgent Care if it does indeed link to the GP out-of-hours service. Our PALS team can be contacted on 01923 217 198 or you can email pals@whht.nhs.uk. Thank you again for your feedback. I do hope you will contact our PALS team. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you need to. My email is antony.tiernan@whht.nhs.uk or you can call 01923 436 229. Alternatively, you can tweet me: @AntonyTiernan.
