"MRI for claustrophobic"

About: Glenfield Hospital

Last time I was due to have an MRI a few years ago, I couldn't do it and ended up almost hysterical and in tears. For a different reason I had an appointment for an MRI on Wednesday evening this week. I am very claustrophobic so, as advised by my gp, took diazepam on the Tuesday and Wednesday, but I was still convinced I wouldn't be able to go through with it. On arrival, the staff were already aware I was very nervous and were totally sympathetic and understanding. They agreed that my husband could stay in the MRI room with me and I was able to go into the MRI feet first which was a huge help. The staff moved the bench into the machine as slowly as I was comfortable with and held my hand until happy that I was ok. Everything was explained fully and they made certain that I was comfortable with the situation before leaving me to start the procedure. My husband sat behind my head and I was able to tilt my head backwards so that, although I was fully inside the machine, I could see out over my head. The whole procedure lasted 30-40 minutes and, while it is not something I would want to do again in a hurry, I am proud of myself for going through with it. I could not, however, have done it without the caring and patient staff and my husband by my side. Thank you to you all.

Dear Reviewer Thank you so much for taking the time to leave your lovely comments. Understandably, many patients find the thought of having an MRI scan distressing. It sounds like you coped especially well given your claustrophobia. We do our best to make sure patients know what is happening and that they are treated with respect. The comfort of our patients is also important to us. So we are delighted that this is reflected in your feedback and that you had a positive experience (MRI scan aside!). Your comments will be passed on to the team at Glenfield, who will be really, really happy with them. We wish you and your husband well. Kind regards, Communications Team Leicester’s Hospitals
