"please train nurses in speciality knowledge!"

About: Guy's Hospital

spent 8 days having kidney surgery on one of the country's leading specialist hospitals. This can be said for the excellent medical team who visited me twice daily and fully explained things even when they didn't go to plan. The nursing staff however were inconsistent in their advice. I am a trained registered nurse so am able to give a good comment on this. One nurse said my tube should be draining, another looked horrified it was draining, a care assistant was down right rude when my blood pressure was 137/75 and asked if my BP was usually this high! er, for a 50 year old healthy woman it's good!! I found the ethnic mix to be a delight on the nursing side with the Eastern Europeans to be especially highly trained in care, sadly the UK nurses seemed disinterested and when I was in extreme pain I was told by the staff nurse that she was not caring for me on that day and carried on making a bed.....why is she a nurse? The main ward lights did not go out before midnight during my entire stay and were on again at 06.00, how were you supposed to rest? the ward was so noisy as visiting was 2-8 with an average 4-6 people around neighbouring beds, some pts were crying as they had returned sick from theatre and the noise was overwhelming, myself included, no one monitored the visitor levels. The cleaners and catering staff were amazing, sorry, but I received more care from these people than the nurses. As a nurse of some 30 years standing, I can comment, where is the care? no eye contact was ever made with pts, no conversation attempts, I work in a very busy district general hospital in the south of England and I feel very proud that we have the skills and passion to give excellent care and have time to get to attend to our patients with a slight smile, makes all the difference, please don't reply with the 'lessons learnt' and 'our nurses are dedicated, caring etc, this was not the case in all of them. please train them as to their speciality. I am English and trained in the UK. Thank you.

We are very concerned to hear of your experience of nursing care at Guy's Hospital. We would like to investigate this situation further to understand what went wrong. From the feedback you have given, we are unable to identify the ward concerned. We would be grateful if you could contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 020 7188 8801 or email pals@gstt.nhs.uk. We can then investigate your concerns and offer you the opportunity to discuss your concerns in full with the Matron of the ward where you were treated.
