I was advised to attend A&E after consulting an out-of-hours GP. I was seen swiftly in A&E, and experienced a small delay before I was seen. I was given medication and asked if I would like to stay overnight for observation. Keen to ensure the issue did not persist I agreed that this would be the best idea. Overnight observation then turned into a 5 day stay at the hospital during which time no tests were taken, I was seen 3 times by a very unhelpful registrar who did not advise me as to why I was not being discharged or if anything was being done to assess my condition. After the first 24hrs a nurse told me I could me taken off nil by mouth, as no surgery would be necessary. This was not communicated to the other nurses (despite being written on the board) and I was refused food for a further 24hrs. On the second day, the registrars and consultants on their rounds assessed and consulted all of the other patients on the ward, but not myself. In the afternoon, once it became clear I would not be seen, I queried the nurse, who concluded that I had 'been left off the list.' As mentioned before, when I was eventually seen by a consultant, his patient care left much to be desired. I was booked in for 2 CT scans, both of which were cancelled. When I was finally successfully booked in for the scan, I was informed at the end of the day the scan was due to take place that I was, again, 'left off the list'. On the 4th day I noticed my hair had begun to fall out, which the consultant attributed to stress. On day 5 I successfully discharged myself. I have completely lost faith in the NHS and will certainly not be visiting this hospital again, regardless of how serious a condition may be. I am sure my bed would have been much more useful to another patient, and the complete lack of communication between staff, resulted in a very confusing, stressful and ultimately unnecessary hospital stay.
