"Gestational Diabetes - Orwell Ward - Special Care..."

Having read some of the other reviews I felt compelled to write a review. Our first baby was born in September 2013. At approximately 20 weeks I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes (this is relatively early as there is no family history of diabetes and I am not overweight). Additionally I had recently been diagnosed with PTSD, undergoing CBT therapy and on anti-depressants. The care I received from my Diabetic Midwife and the rest of the team was amazing and I honestly don't think I could have got through my pregnancy and birth without them. It is true that there isn't always a diabetic midwife available to speak to (like the other midwives they work shifts on the wards), but I was provided with a contact number for the hospital's main diabetes unit if I needed to speak to someone when I couldn't get hold of them. Additionally they kept in close contact with my community midwife and my GP to ensure everyone knew what was going on with regards to my care. Due to my PTSD, it was agreed that I would have a scheduled C-Section and the diabetic midwife organised for me to have a side-room on Orwell Ward. They also planned their shifts on the Orwell ward to ensure that they were the midwife present at my C-section and on the ward for the 2 days post-section. Unfortunately our son ended up in Special Care with an infection. The nurses and doctors caring for him were fantastic. The care was second to none and their support for us as new parents was exceptional. I remained a patient on Orwell whilst our son was in Special Care. The staff on Orwell Ward did everything they could to support me during my stay with them. They supported me with expressing breast milk for my baby, held me when I cried at night after my husband went home, woke me to update me with news from Special Care, constantly reassured me and spent hours helping me breast feed when the time came. I will never forget the care I received and I hope that the diabetic midwife (and the rest of the team) will still be working at Ipswich Hospital when we decide to expand our family.
