What I liked
The social services staff within the hospital were very helpful and supportive.
What could be improved
The standards of care and hygiene fell short of my expectations. My Mother was admitted following a fall at home last November. She recovered from the fall with no injuries within 24 hours but was kept in the hospital because of a urine infection. She was moved to 4 different wards for no obvious reason and after a few weeks she developed pressure sores which became infected with MRSA. This was not diagnosed by the hospital while she was in their care. After 8 weeks in hospital she was declared medically fit and released to a Nursing Home where she died 6 weeks later. The principal cause of death on her death certificate was MRSA.
Anything else?
The situation does not appear to have improved as I note that this Hospital failed a Healthcare Commission inspection on cleanliness and infection control in July 2008. They found that the trust is not meeting its duty to "have in place appropriate management systems for infection prevention and control". Why should elderly patients be put at risk when going into this Hospital for routine treatments?
