"Poor care for Alzheimer's patient whilst on orthopaedic ward"

My father, aged 78yrs, was admitted to Bradford Royal Infirmary after a fall and with a broken hip. He was in quite a late stage of Alzheimer's Disease, with very little cognitive reasoning and understanding of language. When visiting the ward we found that his meal had been put in front of him or a cup of tea; as he no longer knew how to feed himself (or in fact what food was!) this stayed there and was taken away untouched. The patients next to him confirmed that the nursing staff made no effort to stay and feed him merely acting as waitresses to deliver and remove the untouched food and drink. When visiting at various times of the day, I observed that the nursing staff spent much time around the nursing station discussing their social lives! I realise that the inevitable end of the Alzheimer's is the death of the patient, and my father was eventually discharged into a nursing home where he died within a fortnight. I am sure this outcome was probably inevitable, but I do feel that more kindness and good patient care could have been shown whilst on this ward. It was a very upsetting time for all the family, and in retrospect we should have made a great fuss and a formal complaint.
