"Nurses were very friendly and ..."

About: Princess Alexandra Hospital (Harlow)

(as the patient),

What I liked

Nurses were very friendly and helpful, doctor was professional in his treatment. Food was surprisingly good!

What could be improved

Doctor seemed too busy to answer my questions and as I was in the cardiac unit and terrified I really needed some answers. I constantly had to remind the doctors and nurses of my allergy to certain drugs and how often I had to take my prescribed drugs from my GP - to the point of a huge argument with a nurse as she tried to make me take a pill in tghe morning which I know I am supposed to take before bed!? She just wouldn't believe me! Even when she discovered I was right she did not aplogise and then proceeded to have the same argument the following morning!

But the worst thing was the cleanliness - all looked fine at first glance but when my son visited he noticed 2 unknown white pills on the floor under my bed. Also noticed dirt around the window frames, by the radiator and along the ridges of the raised lip on the table which goes over the bed to eat from. Nobody cleaned these areas in the 5 days I was in the hospital, just gave to floor a mop. Not good enough I'm afraid and I was scared the whole time of infection.

Also on the day I was advised I was to be discharged I called my family to come and collect me, having been told I just had to wait for the pharmacy to return my drugs. My wife and son then arrived and we waited FIVE hours for the drugs to come back. We were told they had to wait for them to be brought over from the pharmacy - WHICH WAS RIGHT NEXT TO THE WARD!!!???? So why the delay? It was only through my son having stern words with the nurses that I got out that day at all! Awful

Anything else?

My son was born in this hospital over 30 years ago now and it has changed a huge amount since then and whilst the treatments available have improved greatly the general cleanliness and safety has got significantly worse to the point of being very worrying. I dread the thought of going back there for any reason, even just to visit someone else.

At the Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust we strive to provide excellent care to all of our patients and their families.

I am really pleased that some of the experience was positive, especially your comment on hospital food. In reference to your concerns, we do believe that things have changed more recently and so would be delighted if you would give us a call and we could give you a tour of the Cardiac Service and perhaps introduce you to members of the team - including our in house domestic service.

You can arrange this by calling our Patient Experience Team on 01279 82 70 84.
