I shut my right thumb in a car door on the Sunday evening and due to the pain levels being very hard to bear (with painkillers) I decided to go to the MIU on Monday evening to seek help.
The screen said that the wait could be anything up to 3 hours. I looked at the waiting area and there was only one other person so I was a bit disappointed to see such a long wait time showing.
I shouldn't have. I was seen within minutes of sitting down to read my book.
The nurse asked me to explain how the injury happened, had a look at it herself then said she wanted an xray taken to see if it was broken or not. I went and took a seat in the xray area. I had barely put my bum on the chair than the radiologist took my paperwork and ushered me in. Back out again within minutes and had a 10 minute wait for the results and the Nurse told me it wasn't broken much to my relief and said she would make a little hole in the nail to allow the blood to escape which would give me instant relief from the pain which was pressure-related - and oh how it did.
She told me how to look after the injury, what painkillers I could take and how often.
I don't suppose the speed of my treatment happens every day or time - but my experience was as awesome as it can be when you've hurt yourself, so thank you one and all.
My nail has since lifted and I think it needs to be taken off before I catch it and it gets ripped off, so I may well be back if that's something they can do - because I've been told that my GP surgery isn't set up for that... rubbish!
