"Absolutely appalled"

About: Royal Berkshire Hospital

After visiting ENT outpatients yesterday as an emergency appointment, I left there making the decision that I would rather live on my current maximum dose of paracetamol and ibruprofen, with reduced hearing than ever go back! One doctor, I simply couldn't understand, the next one gave me false information, he tried to fob me off by telling me the hearing tests were ok, I saw them, the person doing them showed me, and explained them to me. He then told me I needed to have an MRI scan and to book an appointment to return to the clinic in 6-8 weeks time and gave me a form to go and get an MRI done...... I walk all the way over to X-ray to find the wait for MRI is ....... 10 weeks..... I go back to ENT.....they tell me to re-areange my appointment with them for 12 weeks time.... Ok, so you want me to be in pain, dizzy with hearing loss for 3 months? Really? I drive, everyday to work, and if I'm dizzy whilst behind the wheel... What am I expected to do? Stop work for 3 months?? I'm in pain. I have had enough! I do to think the doctor even read the test results. The clinic was running 45 minutes late and he just wanted me out of the room. I will continue to self medicate until either my war stops hurting or my liver packs up from constantly taking pain killers! Thanks RBH. But on a positive, the nurses and admin staff were amazingly lovely!

We are sorry that your experience of our ENT outpatient department was not good. The department’s lead consultant has reviewed your case file and wishes to apologise as he believes that your consultation was not to the standard that we usually provide. The department is more than happy for another appointment with a consultant to be arranged for you. To facilitate this please contact Matron Tristram Mills directly on 0118 322 8918 or email tristram.mills@royalberkshire.nhs.uk. The lead consultant has spoken with the medical ENT team regarding your feedback and as a result, our education lead consultant has discussed medical clerking at our teaching for doctors on 18 March 2014, and will be providing training to the relevant doctors on medical clerking. We are pleased to hear that you found our nurses and administrative staff to be professional.
