"Day Surgery Nightmare, Husband covered in blood..."

About: Barnet Hospital

My husband had removal of a lump to the back of his head yesterday at the Day Surgery Unit, where do I start? When I greeted my husband in the waiting room post surgery, he was covered in large spots and lines of blood down his neck clearly visible. I am a nurse of many years and I am only asking for the Day Surgery Unit to look after every single patient in the way that they deserve. I always nurse all of my patients with the very best care that they deserve and would hope that this was reflected across the entire profession, working to best and safest practice. This did not appear evident at the Day Surgery Unit. I was horrified to see my husband in such a state post surgery. We had to go into the toilets in the waiting area and clean him up, just aswell I had some baby wipes in my bag so I managed to clean him up before we left. Luckily enough for the Day Surgery Unit, the waiting room was very empty as it was the end of the day, otherwise I'm sure they would of had a lot of extremely nervous patients. My husband also said that he felt like he was on a conveyor belt, he said when he did enter the operating theatre he said he heard the theatre staff talking amongst themselves and not using any basic care skills such as every now and then checking on him. When I worked in operating theatres as an anaesthetic sister and even for other procedures in other fields of nursing, we talk to our patients to help keep them calm and relaxed this is basic care. My husband also said to me that the team had acknowledged that he bled a lot after the first incision which ran onto the front and sides of his neck, therefore again the team should have checked him to ensure that all of the blood was washed of him, again this is such basic care, rather than move him out of theatre to get the next patient in. If they let my husband leave theatre in the state he was in, I would hate to think how effective their infection control procedures are are how they are implemented. When my husband was first called into the unit from the waiting room, I went up with him to the door, I asked the nurse if I could go in with him, the nurse looked at me and just said that I must wait in the waiting room. The nurse appeared to be sharp in her response and in my opinion could do with learning a few things about compassion and basic communication between patients and their relatives. After one hour a surgeon then came out from Day surgery looking for my husband, I informed the surgeon that my husband was in the Day Surgery Unit for the past hour. There appeared to be major problems within the unit, it appeared that there appeared to be lack of communication, extreme lack of standard basic care, I was extremely horrified, disappointed and annoyed with the lack of standard basic care that my husband received yesterday.
