"Opthalmic Department"

About: Watford General Hospital

My husband has dry macular degeneration and this was our third visit. On all of these occasions the staff have been very pleasant, and although we initially waited in reception we then used the automatic check in service and we could then be seated whilst waiting to be called. The receptionist is very always busy and their are always long queues but we have always been cheerfully greeted. The specialists we have seen have always tried to be helpful and the procedure my husband had carried out was done quickly and although their in no known cure to help macular sufferers the advices given were helpful. We were not hurried when we asked questions about this condition. Just a pity that nothing can be done for dry macular degeneration sufferers.

Thank you for taking the time to let us have feedback about the treatment your husband has received from our ophthalmology team at Watford Hospital. I am of course very pleased to hear that you feel the team are pleasant, cheerful and give you time to ask the questions you and your husband have. I was sorry to hear that there are often queues, but pleased to hear the electronic check-in facilities help. Our team will obviously be able to support you and your husband, and to offer you further advice on his condition. However, you will find the NHS Choices website helpful as it contains a wealth of information about the illness. You can read more here: http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Macular-degeneration/Pages/Treatment.aspx. In addition, have you heard about the Macular Society? They offer a wide range of support and services for people with macular conditions. This includes local support groups, leaflets and a helpline. Thank you again for taking the time to let us have feedback. I have shared it with our team and I know they will appreciate the positive comments and will do all they can to reduce the queues. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you need to. My email is antony.tiernan@whht.nhs.uk or you can call me on 01923 436 229. Alternatively, you can tweet me: @AntonyTiernan.
