"A midwife treatened and was aggressive towards me"

About: Pinderfields General Hospital

The are two wonderful midwifes, a real great pair with a true understanding of the pressures a father faces when his wife is in labour. My girlfriend was havin a c section, she was very hopefull she woud do it with local anesetic. But when she got in the theatre she begn to panick, she turned to me and asked if she could be put to sleep. She was terrified, i said to to the doctor in a state of anxiety and panick, that she wants to be asleep for process, he said this wasnt possible, so i said we was given the choice while we where waiting so why cant she choose now, his reply was no you didnt have a choice earlier, my reply under lot of stress was are you saying i am lying. They said no we not calling you a liar. Then they began the process of talking her into staying awake. Even though she as shaking and crying in fear. Still they tried to talk her round. So i felt i had to defend her and stop these people trying to force her into do something she was no way ready for. I made my self clear and told them to stop trying to talk her into it and just put her asleep. They still tried stressin all the points of why to stay awake. I said with frustration i am not stupid i understand why to stay awake but look at her she is terrified. Still they tried to insist it was a problem to put her asleep. Finally the lady who gave us the choice came and spoke to my girlfriend. Explaining she had a choice and it was no problem if she wanted to be asleep. Yet the anesthatist was adament there was no choice they were all to pushy for her to stay awake, any person with an ounce of sense would of realised she needed to be asleep. Finally it was agreed for her to sleep. The surgeon then said well you need to leave now with annoyance in his voice i said fine got up and left, shaken up and annoyed that it took so much energy to get her put to sleep. The nurse saw me in the corridor and asked how is my girlfriend, in my frustration and annoyance i swore about the doctors that very moment a head midwife swooped onto to me very aggresively and accused me of swearing at her, i explained that i wasnt even talking to her and wasnt swearing at anyone it was general frustration, she persued me to my girlfriends wards bed threatening me with security, i explained she was antagonizing me and to leave me alone. She said what get changed, i said look leave me alone, so as i am stood at the curtain she closes the curtain in my face sharply and aggressively, i open and explain to her there was no need to do that, she said you are getting changed i said no i wasnt and i was perfectly capable of closing the curtain myself. Her behaviour was uncalled for and extremely aggresive. My girlfriend tells me that she stormed into the opertating theatre, shouting at her saying hes is going to be thrown off the ward. Which i wasnt as our conversation ended with no security been called. My girlfirend was very upset and worried i wouldnt be there when my daughter was born.

We would be pleased to arrange for any concerns to be investigated if the family would like to contact us directly. In general terms staff have a duty to safeguard the well being of all patients in their care and judgement calls frequently have to be made based on the circumstances prevalent at any given time.
