"Please read the notes"

About: Manchester Royal Infirmary / Oral surgery

(as the patient),

I attended the Dental Hospital to have treatment under sedation as suggested by my Dentist. The staff were very pleasant and helpful, however, having had the treatment and recovering from the sedation, I was asked if I was a heavy smoker or suffered from asthma as my blood levels apparantly dropped quite drastically, whereby I required oxygen.

As I don't smoke or have asthma, I informed them that due to an incident 4 years previously I had inhaled smoke (I am a firefighter)and suffered RADS. Not having read my notes appropriatly this was not picked up. It also transpired recently that my GP was not informed that this incident had occurred and advised that it was not my role as the patient to inform the GP.

I know that staff are very busy.In my case there was no major incident, however, this may not have been the case. It would be advisable to make sure that notes are read appropriatly or the appropriate questions asked. This is not to take away from the staff's politeness and help for which I am grateful.
