"Long wait for surgery at Rotherham District General"

About: Rotherham Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

I went into the Rotherham District General hospital on monday evening with suspected appendicitis. I went without food monday night and all day tuesday (waiting for surgery), but I was not operated on until 10am wednesday, despite being on the emergency list. If it was known that I wasn't going to be operated on until wednesday, then why did I have to wait so long without eating?

Thank you for posting your comments on this website and I was sorry to read of the delay you encountered in being taken to theatre for your operation. Your comments have been passed to Matron who has also expressed her apologies for the delay. Matron has advised that it would appear your operation depended on a slot on the emergency theatre list, which by its nature can be unpredictable, and is dependent on the number and urgency of patients requiring surgery. If this was the case you should have had this explained to you and at some point you perhaps could have been offered oral fluids and diet if your condition permitted.

It is difficult to comment further without knowing the individual details of your experience and if you would like Matron to look into this she would be more than happy to speak with you. If you would like to discuss your concerns further, please contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 01709 307646.

I do hope that your surgery went well and would like to thank you once again for your post.
