"Lack of patient care"

About: University Hospital Lewisham

My Mother is currently a patient on Juniper Ward, this is the 3rd time she has been a patient on this ward within the last 4 weeks, being discharged to early after her first stay, she was readmitted two weeks ago.,She deterriated after 1 week and went to HDU where she was cared for as you would expect. She was transferred back to Juniper where we were assured that she would receive excellent nursing care, imagine my shock on visiting her today, she was being sick and no vomit bowl was provided, she is very ill and one of the symptom's is sickness, she was very distressed that she was sick over herself and the bed, this could easily have been avoided, also the nurse call button was behind the bed , after the nurses changed my mother and the bed, we noticed, the bed was covered in blood, her venflon had come out, again if we hadn't been there this would not have been spotted as my mother wasn't able to get the attention of a nurse, I appreciate the nurses are very stretched, but I feel basic patient care is not being followed, I do not believe she is on the correct ward for her medical condition.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment about your mothers care on Juniper ward. I am the Matron of the ward and am very concerned to learn that you felt that your mother did not receive an adequate level of care from the nurses. My expectation, whether the ward is very busy or not, is that basic care needs should be provided for. Clearly for a patient being sick this obviously includes a vomit bowl being to hand as well as the call bell being within reach of the patient. I am sorry that this did not occur. When we receive complaints or compliments we use these anonymously to provide feedback to the nurses to heighten awareness via our ward meetings to help to ensure that the same does not happen again. If you would like you discuss your mothers case with me in more detail please contact me using the following details: Ann-Marie Coiley Matron for Surgery University Hospital Lewisham Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust 020 8333 3000 Bleep 2910 annmarie.coiley@nhs.net
