"Lack of signs to Ward 10"

On visiting Southern General Hospital, Glasgow I was dismayed to find NO signage or directions for Ward 10. Asked 5 different staff members who all indicated it was along the corridor leading to Wards 9 & 11. Made perfect sense, however this corridor does indeed lead to those wards but everyone failed to point out that you have to go up a flight of stairs to get to Ward 10. Finally made it and expressed irritation to Ward 10 staff who said they had "only" been there for 8 years and that lots of people complain about lack of signage! Really?Example sign - no ward 10

Thank your for taking the time and trouble to provide your feedback. We have received the following comments from our Estates colleagues.

"The signage strategy which is used within the hospital is based on the site being broken down into zones. The large signage panels which are in place at both the Hardgate Road and Govan Road entrances list the hospital's various departments and wards, within the zone in which they are located. Reference to ward 10 is contained within zone 2 as 'wards 7-11'. As patients progress into the site the signage indicates which route to follow until zone 2 is reached. Once in zone 2 directional signage is available which points to the entrance of the corridor in which ward 10 is located. Having carried out an investigation of the signage for ward 10, as indicated by the concerned visitor, it has been confirmed that there is information in relation to all other wards and depts within this corridor, however there is no information in relation to the location of ward 10. Please convey our apologies for this situation and gratitude for bringing this to our attention.

To address this issue we have put in place temporary directional signage for ward 10 at both entrances to the corridor and have arranged for the Boards signage contractor to carry out a site visit week commencing 10th March to agree a permanent solution."

Dear Colleagues

Would you be able to submit a picture to the site when this is in place - which would be a really powerful example of the impact of 'Safety''s feedback and in particular the change that you have made? I notice that 425 people have read about this, so it is also a great way to showcase the commitment of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde to make changes in response to individual patient stories that highlight the need for improvement.

This posting has also got me thinking about signs and how helpful it is for the people who use our public services to provide us with feedback on whether they are helpful. If you are reading this posting and you are visiting an NHS Scotland site be sure to let us know if the signs are helpful.

Thank you so much for your response. I'm delighted to know you have put temporary signs in place pending a permanent solution. Visiting hospital is stressful for many people, both patients and relatives/visitors, so hopefully being able to find Ward 10 should remove the angst felt from being lost and unable to find the Ward. One less thing to worry about.

Craig, like you I'd like to see the new signage once in place. Great suggestion.
