"my experience at tameside A+E"

About: Tameside General Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

I was referred by my doctor with suspected appendicitis and when I got there they saw me pretty much straight away. but I went for my bloods took and couldnt get any and I blacked out for a little while and they really took care of me, saw a surgeon straight away and nurses were so nice. they really did look after me and im so thankful to them. so helpful. the only fault was that I had bad stomach pain and back ache and was sat on a plastic chair for about 5 hours but other than that was excellent. thankyou: )

Response from Lindsay Stewart, Deputy Director of Nursing, Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust

Thank you very much indeed for finding the time and taking the trouble to tell us of you experiences.

Knowing that our staff were simply ‘nice’ to you means a great deal, as sometimes, NHS staff can be very competent, but sometimes forget that just to be pleasant, cheerful and polite is every bit as important as delivering 21st century technical care.

Being in pain and sitting on a plastic chair is however unacceptable and we are very sorry for this. There are occasions when the department gets very congested and chairs are the only place to seat people, but making those chairs comfortable is something we can do something about.

I have asked that we order a new stock of waiting room chairs that strike a balance between being comfortable but also meet infection control needs.

We sincerely hope that you do not need to visit us again, but if you do and find the chairs more comfortable than on your last visit.

Kind regards

John Goodenough

Director of Nursing
