In 2012 I had my knees replaced, the first one in May and the second four months later in September.
I saw Mr Collier when I had my first knee done. He was a first class, wonderful surgeon. Before the operation he laid the cards on the table, explained all the risks and possible benefits and then asked if wanted them doing or not. I really liked that kind of straight talking.
I also saw the anesthetist, Dr Sinha, who assessed my medical history and suggested I have a spinal injection rather that a general anesthetic during the operation. He explained that I could take an ipod and listen to music if I wanted to. In the end although I took my music the staff all talked to me and kept me reassured all the time.
After the operation the nurses on the ward were fantastic, they treated me really well. The ward was very clean.
I saw Mr Collier on the ward 2 or three times whilst I was in hospital, it was very reassuring to see him. I was also seen by the physiotherapists who were very good, explained all the exercises I needed to do, how important they were. I did exactly as they told me.
When I had my second knee done I saw another surgeon who had come from Oswestry to help reduce the waiting list. The procedure for this second operation was the same but this took longer to heal as it was more damaged in the first place.
I now run on the treadmill, do leg weights, kneel to do my gardening and kick boxing. It’s the best thing I’ve ever had done. The consultant I’ve been seeing recently, Mr Malik, was amazed how well I had recovered and asked if I would be prepared to speak to other patients about my experience. I’d be glad to if they are in Cannock.
I am now 67 and happy to be so active.
