"Moved to the ward in the middle of the night"

About: East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust / Emergency ambulance Pilgrim Hospital / Accident and emergency Pilgrim Hospital / General medicine

(as the patient),

I arrived my ambulance early in the morning with sepsis. The medical care I received in A+E was good although the nurse spent most of his time discussing his dream of joining the rugby world cup medical team with anyone who walked past. He not once spoke to me to reassure me or ask me how I was doing. He put in a canula etc. Without telling me what he was doing. I was transferred to cdu and spent the day there. My children came to see me, they were very upset because I am ill often and they last saw me go off in an ambulance.

A staff member came in apparently screeching, pulled back the curtain and proceeded to throw out my family. Such was her tone my youngest burst into tears. I tried to explain that they needed to know I was ok after seeing me so ill. But she just got ruder and ruder and chucked my family out without even giving me chance to say goodbye.

That evening I could hear my personal details being shouted from one end of the corridor to the other along with other patients. That evening I went to sleep in bed and at 11:45pm a healthcare assistant appeared by my bed with a nurse and asked the nurse if I could go in the chair. I woke up to this and said I didn't want to go in the chair as I was sleeping. The healthcare assistant told me I couldn't sleep then as I was being handed over to a ward. I was upset by this as the Doctor on CDU had made a plan and said he would come and see me in the morning. I said if I moved now that I wouldn't get to see the Doctor. The healthcare assistant said he would see me on the ward and I said that wouldn't happen as each ward has their own doctors and I was right as I never saw the Doctor again.

Once on the ward I was placed opposite a dead body and a grieving husband arrived and then they washed the body and then the morning people came. It was about 3am at that point. The next morning I never did get to see the Doctor who promised to follow me up in the morning and a lot of my plan that was made was lost by moving ward. The lady next to me was doubly incontinent and she would bell for help and no one would come. She was crying out and begging for help, I went to find the sister and get her help. It turned out someone had switched the call bells off. How frightening.
