"Say no to trainees"

About: East Surrey Hospital

I spent some time at the end of January in East Surrey Hospital, but the worst part of it all was in the A & E dept. a young male trainee was asked to put a cannula in my arm. He tried 6 attempts and still could not do it. In the end he panicked and started stabbing at my veins!! It was truly very disturbing and actually put me into shock. I am not great with needles anyway and think it would have been fair if he had asked me if I minded that he was only training, it would have given me the option to say no!! He should be supervised before he is let loose on patients!!

I am concerned to read this comment, as the trainee should not have been allowed to continue. Please be assured this matter will be investigated and addressed with those involved. Jackie Thompson Matron, Emergency Department
