"Gastroenterology"

About: Manor Hospital

I will not name the Doctor concerned but up until meeting with this Doctor in this department my treatment has been caring and good. The Doctor concerned prescribed me with a tablet that made me quite poorly after taking just one. When I called his Secretary the following day looking for support and guidance on what I should do now I was told the Doctor did not talk with patients on the telephone and that she would talk with the Doctor and call me back. I had to call back as my call was not returned. I was then told that the Dr had said stop taking the tablet immediately - thought that was an obvious one! - and go and visit my GP. In other words " not my problem! " I was also told by this same Dr to call his secretary to arrange an appointment following an MRI scan which had been arranged by another consultant ( a far more caring Doctor) When I did so, again his secretary said she would call me back, again she didn't and I got the message if he needed to see me he'd send me an appointment. It was only when I got angry and told his secretary to tell him that was not acceptable as he needed to sort my medication out and discuss further treatment and plans that I got a call to say I could have the next available appointment which is April! This Doctor spent the 4 minutes of my last appointment telling me how busy he was running three clinics and to be honest really wan't interested in me! My bottom hardly touched the seat after my 45 min wait over my appointment time before I was out! I feel appalled to be told to go back to my GP to sort out my medication etc- forgive me I thought I had been referred by my GP to a specialist in this field - if my GP can sort things out why are we paying this Dr a salary? Isn't that what is called "passing the buck?" Also the " he doesn't talk to patients on the telephone" comment is appalling - is the Doctor to superior to talk to a mere mortal like myself? Surely there are times that a good Doctor supports their patient over the telephone. I know this to be true as another Consultant went out of their way to call me to support me after a biopsy , that's what I call the human touch and a great Doctor. I am visiting my GP next week to ask to be referred to another hospital and different Doctor, I need a Doctor who is dedicated to his patients and not his image of " I am greater than though"

I am very sorry to hear of the issues you have been experiencing, this is certainly not the type of response we would expect you to receive when contacting the Trust. Thank you for taking the time to write your comments, in order for us to investigate this further please can you contact the Head of Nursing, Wendy Lear on 01922 721172 as she will need some further details in order to investigate what has happened. If you do not feel that you would like to speak to Wendy please contact the Patient Relations Team on 01922 656463 who will also be able to help. Thank you again for bringing these issues to our attention, I am sorry that the treatment you have received on this occasion has fallen short of that which you would have expected.
