"Seemingly uninterested"

About: Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital / Breast surgery

(as the patient),

I recently had an appointment at the breast clinic to have an ultra sound scan. I was seen by a lovely female doctor and healthcare assistant initially who were very reassuring and personable.

I was then seen by a male doctor for my ultrasound. The one negative aspect of my experience was there being a nurse or healthcare assistant who wasn't introduced to me. They paid no attention to me during my exam. I laid on the bed being scanned by the doctor and they were working at a computer. I initially thought they were working but due to where they were standing it appeared to me I could see the Amazon browser.

So despite the fact they were there to support me, they didn't appear to look at me or the doctor once during the exam. This seemed to change when the consultant came in, when they stood silently watching. They didn't offer any support at all except to tell me how to lie on the bed.

Given the sensitive nature of the appointment and the gender differences I would have imagined I would have had more support. Thankfully I was reassured by the doctors that there was nothing sinister.

I was slightly taken aback by the consultants comment that I am too young to get cancer. Although he probably meant it reassuringly, given that I am twenty nine, it is clear cancer affects all age groups.

When I got dressed I said goodbye to the nurse and got no response. This was a challenging appointment, and I was really surprised at the lack of support that this one person offered. It really contrasted with the first doctor and nurses I saw when I arrived at the breast clinic.
