"Day Surgery"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

I had a miscarriage last year and had to go in for a DNC, I was told my husband could go in with me due to the circumstances. When I went in that day I was told my husband had to go home when I explained I was told he could stay the nurse just went "right fine". I was shown to a room and after a while another nurse came in to do blood pressure etc. She was very abrupt and after 5 minutes she left after another nurse came to the door and asked if she was going to lunch, she couldn't wait to get away. Another nurse came in to ask me questions and the way she spoke to me and looked at me you would have thought I had done something wrong, to that point I said to my husband 'is it just me or is everyone really moody in here'?. It made me very upset and from the moment I went in I just wanted to come home. Someone then came and got me for theatre and thankfully, he was very nice and so were the rest of them. The difference was totally night and day. They put me at ease straight away. I feel if all the staff had been like that it would have made this awful experience a little easier.

Response from Margaret Mclay, Senior Charge Nurse, Day Surgery, NHS Forth Valley

I am so sorry that you had a miscarriage, this must have been a difficult time for you and your husband. I have shared your posting with my team and we are extremely dissapointed that you feel the staff were abrupt and moody.

We always aspire to be supportive, kind and caring, this should have been the case for you.

As a team we will work harder to ensure that we always provide care that supports our patients. We have discussed the importance of consistent communication, especially in relation to family members being able to stay.

I would be happy to discuss any issues in person if that would help.
