"I recently accompanied a relative ..."

About: Rotherham Hospital

(as a relative),

What I liked

I recently accompanied a relative having surgery at Rotherham hospital. Clinical care was also perfectly acceptable, with no problems at all. The standards of hygiene in waiting and treatment areas were good.

What could be improved

I feel that I must comment on the state of the toilets in the main reception. On several occasions (over a period of two months) hygiene was unacceptably poor for a hospital environment, the floor was covered in urine, walls were dirty and the washbasins had obviously not been thoroughly cleaned for some time. In addition to this the blue lighting employed in this area made it very difficult for an elderly relative to safely use the facilities.

Anything else?

A good hospital let down by a lax attitude to cleanliness in these areas.

Dear Andy

Thank you for your comments, it’s good to hear that you were happy with your clinical care and treatment.

I note your comments regarding the toilets in the main reception area and I am extremely sorry that you experienced a problem as we pride ourselves on high standards of cleaning.

The Trust is aware that the toilets in their current location are not really adequate, and accept that the blue lighting is not ideal but is there as a deterrent for drug users. The toilets are cleaned three times every day with an additional spot check at some point during the day.

Notices are in place for domestic staff to sign once they have completed cleaning.

There are also signs with contact numbers in case the toilets are in a poor state in between regular cleaning.

Please accept my sincere apologies if the cleanliness of these toilets fell below our high standards.
