My son and daughter in law had the unfortunate experience of having to go to Wishaw Maternity Unit this week. My daughter in law awoke in the morning with as she thought a miscarriage. She arrived at the maternity unit at 6.30am. By the time some info was taken, staff were advised at this time that she had a miscarriage in October 2013.
As it was the morning change of shift, they were left in a room until after 8. She was examined by a doctor at 9.20am. He advised that things looked OK but due to the history they would scan her just to make sure. They again were left in a room. No one came to check on her or offer any help or advice, not even a drink of water although this was asked for twice. No time was given for scan to take place.
My son had to go to the desk twice and ask what was happening. In the end at 1pm they were told they wouldn't get a scan as there was no slots available. They could wait till 5pm but there was no guarantee that it would take place. The next time they could arrange it would be next week. As you can imagine, they were both distraught at this and going on the history you would think that this could have been carried out as an emergency. All they wanted was to know if their baby was still ok and the heartbeat was still there.
After some strong discussions with staff, a nurse from early pregnancy unit came in with a machine and advised that she didn't really know how to use it but would try. She used the machine and said heartbeat was strong. How could she know this if she didn't really know how to work the machine? My son said he has never been treated so badly in all his life. No one showed any concern or empathy towards them.
