"Inconsistencies"

About: Leighton Hospital

I have much experience of many hospitals, Wythenshawe, Christies and Macclesfield. My parent was admitted to the PAA ward at Leighton late Jan 2014, I was horrified to witness two junior Doctors physically examining the infected leg without washing their hands before or after the examination. The health care workers all wore gloves! The nurse in charge of my parent was difficult to understand and saying sorry can you repeat that again was time consuming for her and embarassing for me. Thank goodness we were there, my parent is deaf. This ward was in disarray and not particularly clean. Ward 1 however was a completely different experience extremely well run by experienced, friendly and professional staff, the medical care and the attention received was excellent. At my parent's request I did not make a complaint at the time.

Thank you for taking the time to post your concern on NHS Choices regarding your parents stay on PAA in Jan this year. I note that you witnessed none compliance of infection control practice from the doctors with a lack of gloves during the examination of your parents leg. This is regarded as unacceptable practise and will be raised directly with the medical team involved. In addition I am sorry that you felt PAA was not clean and looked in disarray. The house keeper and the team are working hard to ensure that PAA is kept tidy and additional cleaning has been put in place. I would hope that should you have need to access our services in the future on PAA that you have an improved experience. I would be very happy to discuss your experience and the actions we have taken with you, please do not hesitate to contact now or in the future via our Custome Care Team on 01270 612410. Your sincerely Loraine Cornes Matron, Emergency Care Division
