"Total hip replacement at PAH"

I have just returned home from a six day stay on Tye Green Ward for a total hip replacement. Every member of staff that I came into contact with, was friendly, courteous and helpful. The two visits prior to admission were useful and I felt prepared for the surgery very well Operation day began with an 8.5 hour wait in the Same Day Admissions Unit before being taken to theatre. For a very nervous patient such as myself, this proved to be very difficult but the staff did their best to keep me informed of my surgeon's progress through his list. This is my only criticism of my stay at the hospital. Sitting on upright chairs with nothing to do whilst waiting nervously for an operation is extremely testing Following the surgery, I was transferred to Tye Green Ward which, in my opinion, can honestly give a nearby private hospital a serious run for its money!! The nursing staff were on hand all the time and responded immediately to a press of the buzzer. Nothing was too much trouble for them however busy they were. On my first night on the ward, I was made a plate of sandwiches and hot chocolate at 3am! Information was freely given and I was kept fully informed as to my progress and likely discharge date. Each time a shift changed, the new staff told us their names and there was a friendly atmosphere in the ward (I was in a Bay with five beds). The physios were confidence-inspiring - I felt dizzy at times but they got me up and active, quickly. The ward was clean, well decorated and airy - a cleaner seemed to be buzzing around most of the time. Food was good and brought to the ward hot most of the time. As I had a bed right next to the window I was able to benefit from fresh air and a great view of the outside world. Finally, I must mention the great skill of the surgeon who operated on me and his anaesthetist who had given me plenty of time beforehand to discuss the operation, risks and recovery rates. I was also given chance to discuss the most suitable anaesthetic. I'm home now which is obviously better than being in hospital, but the Tye Green Staff made the experience of having this operation, as pleasant as possible and I would like to express my thanks to everyone involved in my care.

What is particularly satisfying is the quality of communication you describe as this has been an area where we recognise we have much to do to improve. Those positive elements notwithstanding I note a number of areas where we could have done more and I will ensure both your comments on waiting for admission to theatre and food are considered in context by the teams responsible for these areas of your experience. Thank you once again for leaving a comment at what must be a time when you are focussed on rest and recuperation. It gives the teams great confidence when good practice is recognised and rewarded through your spontaneous positive feedback.
