"Car Parking System not fit for purpose"

About: Queen's Hospital, Burton Upon Trent

Since the introduction of the new camera-recognition system I am constantly appalled by the method one has to use to check out. The keypad on the machines is almost impossible to read for anyone with other than perfect eyesight. The keypad is too low down, everyone has to crouch down to use it. OK for wheelchair users (would they be using it anyway) but not for the rest of us. The system does not tell you what you owe, you have to calculate it having had to remember the time you checked in. Make an error and you risk a fine. Administrators should go to the Octagon Centre Carpark to see how simple a similar system can be; easy to use machines; machine tells you what you owe; pay and go.

Thank you for taking the time to inform us of your comments. We appreciate your feedback as it enables us to address the concerns of our users. The Trust's new machines are Disability Discrimination Act compliant so that wheelchair users are able to use the machines. However, we are addressing the problems encountered by those who have difficulty bending down to see the current keyboards and will be installing an additional machine by the main entrance of the hospital which will be raised. We do recognise that the keyboards could be more visible and we have met with the payment machine manufacturers who are currently assessing different options to improve the contrast on the keyboards. We are currently installing better signage across site, which we hope will make the system easier for first time users to understand and make them aware to check their arrival time. Whilst it is important for people to note their arrival time, so that they can pay the correct tariff, this does not need to be exact as there is a 20 minute grace period across site. However, we recognise that mistakes may be made and so no Penalty Charge Notices will be upheld for users that have made a valid attempt to pay correctly.
