"Our daughters appointment with Ophtalmologist"

About: Pilgrim Hospital

After I complained to PALS at Grantham Hospital about a long wait for an appointment, the Service Manager of Pilgrim Hospital rang me and offered her several appointment times at Pilgrim Hospital on 28th January. She attended one of these appointments and we have now found out that she has Primary Retinal Dysfunction and the Ophthalmologist who we saw has in fact sent all my daughterr's information to the Ophthamolgy Society to be registered partially sighted. They were wonderful with our daughter who has autism/aspergers syndrome, as were the staff who had to do eye test s first. We asked them for the truth and she gave us the truth, which was she didn't know if our daughter's sight would get worse or stay the same. Our daughter has an appointment with the Neurologist on 5th March at Grantham hospital and no doubt we will find out even more information about our daughter's condition. Her eyesight has even deteriorated since Tuesday when the appointment was. If I hadn't put in a complaint to Grantham Hospital our daughter would still be waiting for an appointment.. Whether Grantham Hospital will still have a record of that complaint, I don't know as I was very happy to get this appointment.. the Consultant has made a note to see our daughter in 6 months time and we would like to see her if possible as she was so good with our daughter. We first met her when she was helping out at Grantham Hospital and she seemed to understand a bit about autism/aspergers sysdrome and our daughter was able to relax and tell her about her eyesight. Overall we are very pleased with how we were treated at Pilgrim Hospital. I am very grateful that the Service Manager rang us up as now we now our daughter will be "In the System" and she and us will get the help we need.I have informed my family and friends of what has happened - both the good and the bad! I would be prepared to come to Pilgrim again if that was the only way for my daughter to get an appointment in the future with the same Consultant.

Dear Gillian

It is nice to hear about the good and bad about your patient experience with the Ophthalmology service. We can only apologise for the poor experience as regards the delay in appointment at Grantham. We are aware of the issues and are trying our very best to resolve the capacity issues at Grantham. It was nice to know that you had a good experience at Pilgrim and a full explanation was given about the condition.

As the same staff cover both Pilgrim and Grantham we will try our best to carry on the good work at Pilgrim improving patient experience all the time while trying to provide the same level of service at Grantham. These comments have helped us get first hand insight into the quality of service we are providing which is always helpful in designing future elements of the service.

Regards

Mr. Mohit Gupta FRCS, FRCOphth

Consultant Ophthalmologist and Head of Service

Pilgrim Hospital, Boston.
