"Ward 32"

About: York Hospital

My relative was a patient on Ward 32 for a couple of weeks. Although nursing care given was OK, there were problems with noise on the ward at night and lights kept on until late which did not aid her sleeping. Also the quality of the hot food was very variable, sometimes OK and sometimes inedible and cold. What a waste. Surely someone should be doing quality checks on the food and rhe amount of waste. The choice of food was not very appetising on some occasions and the meal ordering system didn't seem to work very well on this ward with choices made not always being available. The patients were not offered a hot drink until around 09.00 in the morning when breakfast was served. A hot drink soon after patients would have been much appreciated and I believe this is provided on some wards. The, no doubt very expensive, bath on the ward was not available on a number of occasions as it was not working and the staff said this was quite common. This needs to be addressed - it is unacceptable that patients are unable to have a bath or have to be taken to another ward to bathe. Another issue was visitor numbers per patient. On one occasion there were 7 visitors to one patient in the adjacent bed. Their behaviour can only be described as raucous and certainly disturbed all other patients and visitors in the room. I would have expected the ward staff to ask visitors to act in a more responsible manner and respect the 2 visitors per bed policy. I can't help feeling that more could be done to make patients a little more comfortable in this ward. Small things can make a big difference to recovery time and patient experience.
