"Unecessary waste of both hosptal, Doctors and my..."

About: Royal Orthopaedic Hospital

I have a condition know as 'Charcots' Joint' which is something that cannot be cured, results in a deformed foot, which will change shape and can only deteriorate. I am a patient at this hospital and have had issues before regarding the amount of footwear I require per annum which was only resolved upon the intervention of an MP. Since that date, every year I am in contact in order to be referred to the footwear makers to obtain my allocation. I am perfectly satisfied with this arrangement and the quality of the footwear provided. Recently I felt a possible change in the shape of my foot and thought it time for the experts to look at it with a view to a possible recasting of the shape for my next allocation. Upon approaching the Department I was amazed to find they insist to only seeing me once referred by my own GP. In these days of us continually hearing about the amount of time wasted by patients within the NHS, 'Why' is this the case? I have wasted my time and that of the GP who is not the expert and I would defy any logic as to why he would not refer me. My condition is permanent, can only get worse and other than for senseless administrative reasons, possibly that a further referral will mean additional funds, there appears to be no logical reason for this process. I have been in contact with the hospital who obviously know my views and I feel that some kind of logical action could be taken in cases such as this. In essence I have taken up a valuable slot of my Doctors time where he could have been dealing with someone more needy for that appointment.

Dear Mr Knight hello and good afternoon I am sorry that you have not felt reassured by the information given to you earlier. I can understand that it must seem unneccesarily bureaucratic and that you are concerned about wasting your GPs time. I am certain they don't feel the same but do appreciate your goodwill to them and the NHS as a whole. As soon as I can see the referral is received I will do what I can to expedite any appointments. with best wishes Claire Williams, Patient Relations Manager
