About: South Tyneside District Hospital

As an employee of the trust I was disappointed with my recent visit to the hospital's x-ray department. The care my daughter received was acceptable, although we were left sitting in the waiting room unnecessarily as the radiographer forgot to advise us we could leave after checking the x-ray. My concern was for another lady who was in the waiting area. Her dignity and confidentiality was breached by a member of staff. The member of staff came out of a room within the x-ray department and proceeded to check the ladies details, including her name and address in a loud voice. She then proceeded to explain what was required by the lady prior to the procedure, including the laxatives she would require prior to her colonoscopy. While the lady did not appear to be distressed by this, I felt that this should have been discussed in a private area rather than the middle of a relatively busy waiting area. This lady's dignity was compromised as was her safety. If there had been anyone dishonest in the waiting room they would have been aware of her address and the time she was to be admitted the following week. I believe that the respect, dignity and confidentiality of our clients is paramount and was disappointed that it was clearly not as important to other staff within our establishment

Thank you for posting your comments on our NHS Choices website regarding a recent hospital visit. Your concerns regarding the privacy and dignity of another patient are fully justified and I will ensure your comments are brought to the attention of the staff in the Radiology Department in order that they can learn from this experience.
