"Maltby Chiropodist: Poor access for disabled people"

About: Adult community services / Podiatry

(as the patient),

I am a disabled person with a mobility scooter and need to have me feet treated by a chiropodist. When I go to have me feet seen to I have a hard time as the treatment rooms are upstairs and whilst there is a lift in the building Rotherham Borough Council do not allow scooters into the lift.

They have offered a wheelchair at the centre but there is only one wheelchair so if other people need it I could be waiting an hour before I can use it.

Recently I used an ambulance to take me to the chiropodist and bring me back home but I am concerned about the cost of this. I don’t need to pay for this but there must be a cost to someone.

In Swinton people who need chiropody treatment and are scooter users are able to use the lift in the building – so why not in Maltby?

I feel that disabled people are discriminated against as scooter users are not allowed into buildings with their scooter – I cannot go into the council offices to pay my rent or use the leisure centre. I can still take the scooter into my GP’s surgery because it is a small scooter.

Dear Cross265, thank you for your post on Patient Opinion and your feedback on the Podiatry Service at Maltby Joint Centre.

Unfortunately, mobility scooters cannot be used in the lift due to the weight of the scooters and lift capacity. However, we are sorry to hear that this has caused you to have a difficult time when visiting Maltby Joint Centre for your podiatry treatment and we would be grateful if you would contact Operational Service Manager, Sandra Lewis on telephone 01709 423239, who would be happy to discuss this further and feedback your concerns.

With best wishes,

Kerry
