"Inappropriate name calling shows a lack of respect"

About: Hull Teaching PCT

(as a relative),

My aunt, aged 86, has attended the same surgery for many years. Recently the doctors have taken to calling out first names instead of Miss, Mrs or Mr****. when calling for the next patient.

I believe this is not only disrespectful and inappropriate, but also condescending, especially as the doctors still expect to be called Dr***

A little respect would not go amiss, even younger patients should not have be so named by a professional.

Response from Engagement Section Assistant, NHS Hull

Dear Allie Thank you for the posting you placed on the above website and we are sorry that your aunt has had such a poor experience with her GP. We have asked Patient Opinion to contact you and ask that you speak to us direct about this matter as we would like to conduct a thorough investigation and resolve this matter for your aunt. If you do not wish to speak with us directly, we respect your wishes, but please be aware that this means we can only give you a general response at this time. My colleagues in our Primary Care Commissioning Team inform me that courtesy and respect for all patients is paramount and is supported through the General Medical Council (GMC) and other training/ protocols. We also took your concerns to the Chairman of the Local Medical Committee, who reiterated that the GP should always check how a patient wishes to be addressed and their wishes respected. I am sorry this is not a more thorough response, but we would need more information to be able to investigate further. Should you wish to contact us on this or any other matter, please do not hesitate to telephone our Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 01482 335409 or by email. NHS Hull is the organisation responsible for deciding how money is spent on local health services [also known as commissioning], ensuring those services are of high quality and meet local needs.
