"ENT and audiology at Raigmore hospital"

About: Raigmore Hospital / Ear, Nose & Throat

(as the patient),

I have had complex hearing problems since my early childhood and, consequently, have had contact with ENT and Audiology services across Scotland for decades. I have to say that the service provided by Raigmore hospital is, in my view, outstanding. Throughout my childhood and adult life I struggled with my significant hearing loss and recurring infections that made me miserable and meant I struggled in social and work situations. Due to the tremendous surgical interventions I received in Raigmore my infections have cleared up more or less entirely. Of course I am still very deaf. However I have two fantastic Bone Anchored Hearing Aids (BAHAs) that have improved my quality of hearing, and life, tremendously.

The key I think to the success to this department is that, strange as it may seem, I do not feel like a patient. I feel like part of the team. My specialist BAHA audiologist and nurse run a clinic which helps me to manage my ears and hearing aids. I am able to speak to both of them openly about what's happening with me. Sometimes this is by attending the clinic, but I can also call them for advice if I need it. They are both supported by reception staff who are always so helpful and professional. They make a fantastic 'first impression' of the service.

I do have criticisms of many of the services run by NHSHighland. But have absolutely none of the ENT and Audiology services - especially my fellow 'BAHA Team' members.

Dear BAHA man

Thank you very much indeed for your positive feed-back on the care you have been receiving from ENT and Audiology colleagues. I will be pleased to pass on your kind words of appreciation.

I think what is most pleasing is that you feel like a genuine partner in you care - which is how it should be. After all you are the expert.

Clearly some of your other experiences from other departments have not been so positive and I am really sorry about that. I would encourage you to tell me some more and I will be happy to look into them to see how we can improve.

Kind regards

.
