"Surgicial assement unit my experience as a patient..."

This week I was admitted to the surgical assement unit , day one & day two I experienced fantastic nursing care & the medical team I can not fault true professionals throughout , the night staff practically my nurse she is a credit to the nursing profession as was the health care assistant working a long side her . Unfortunately when I woke up on Saturday morning no obs were taken & my Health went down hill , I couldn't stop being sick I became dehydrated , I asked the nurse at five o'clock to help me as I couldn't stop being sick I couldn't keep any fluids down , therefore I was back on IV fluids again , but not until the night shift started & the A team arrived again . I over heard a hca telling a medical assistant / naval leave her she not ours leave her ?I found this completely unprofessional , the language I heard over the coming day was disgraceful from this health care assistant , Patients were left with no water, surely this is basic nursing care ? I appreciate the ward was short staffed , patients were looking after each other i.e. getting rid of sick bowls , calling for help that never came getting water . What I found practically distressing was an elderly lady waiting four hours for a drink of water, repeatedly asking the nurse , to be told by her nurse I want a drink & fag to?! is this really how a trained nurse should be caring for her vunerable sick patients . Who repeatedly said she was a diabetic & also was vomiting ? It's a sad how one team of nurses can be out standing & a credit to the profession , the shift changes & so does the standard of care decline . I know this ward is very busy & I appreciate staffing levels were short on Saturday afternoon but the standard of basic nursing care should never change , I felt helpless lying in my hospital bed when I wanted to help the elderly lady in my bay .

Good afternoon and at the outset, I am so sorry to read that you experienced levels of care that were so different on the Surgical Assessment Unit. The concerns you have raised regarding the poor attitude of a number of staff are unacceptable and it is, as you say, very sad that a few individuals have let down their patients and their colleagues.

I know that the Matron and Ward Manager of the SAU would welcome any further information you are able to share with us in order that the problems you encountered can be appropriately addressed.
