"Taking my 91 year-old father to A&E last Sunday"

About: John Radcliffe Hospital

Last Sunday 19th January my 91-year old father fell at home and cut his head. As it looked like it required stitching, and also because he is on Warfarin, I brought him into A&E just before 1pm. There was a bit of delay being seen (not the three hours mentioned on the display panel, just 70 minutes) but there were about 60 patients there and staff were very busy. In any case, once he was seen he was treated with great care and kindness by all the staff (triage nurse, porters, scanning people, x-ray people, assessment unit nurses and doctors, onein particular. My father is extremely deaf which makes communication difficult but care was taken to make sure he was kept informed throughout the process. What was really impressive was that although the obvious problem was the cut on his head, the medical team spotted that he had a bad cough and took the extra care to carry out blood and urine tests and a chest x-ray. These revealed that he also had a chest infection and a bladder/urinary tract infection, and he was put on a course of antibiotics. We were really impressed by the standard of care he received.
