"The professionalism and dedication ..."

About: Royal Preston Hospital

(as a relative),

What I liked

The professionalism and dedication of the doctors and nursing staff was exemplary. The way they managed their time between patients, even though the ratio of patients to nurses was at times diabolical, was humbling.

What could be improved

The staff need to be supported more as there are not enough on duty, especially during silent hours. Everybody that I have spoken to is asking the question why so much money was spent on the new circus tent structure at the front of the hospital, when the money could have been spent more wisely on getting more staff and/or improving their working conditions. Any such improvement would have an immediate impact on the patients, who it is all about.

Anything else?

I also have been coming to the hospital to see my mother for about 5-6 weeks, every day or night, and not only is it sometimes difficult to find a parking space, it also has cost a fortune in parking fees. More should be done to reduce the fees for long term visitors.

Thank you for your comments.

The structure at the front of the hospital is the new Emergency Department at the hospital. The external canopy design was inexpensive with the majority of the £1.1 million scheme being used to create a separate paediatric waiting area as part of a long-term aim to create a dedicated children’s Emergency Department to benefit patients.

We have recently recruited additional staff to a number of areas and the current revamp of ward areas includes improving the design of wards to aid staff during their working day. These designs incorporate staff suggestions.

The Trust does offer free parking to long stay patients and visitors, in particular people with relatives on the critical care unit and patients attending for regular cancer treatment. Our parking charges are among the lowest in the country but we are keen to help those patients and visitors who are being admitted for long periods and a visitor/carer can enquire on the ward about the criteria for the free parking.
