My 9 month old son came down with a very high fever and was acting listless and very unwell. After visiting the GP, the nurse rang for an ambulance to take us to Lewisham Hospital's children's A&E. We were handed over to the care of a nurse immediately upon arrival. She cared for my son until a paediatrician arrived, within 30 minutes. We were also seen by two of the paediatric registrars, one of whom continued to check on us and oversee the care for my son the entire time we were in hospital. I honestly could not be more pleased with the experience we had. The staff were very kind and respectful, as well as competent. They fully explained what they were doing and checked that I was ok with their decisions for my son. When it transpired that we were to spend a good portion of the night in the hospital, one of the nurses moved my son and I into the short-stay area where we each had a bed. There were children's books and toys available for my son as well as tea and toast for me. The little touches made me feel like we were really being looked after. I am relieved that the A&E department was not closed down (as proposed by the government) and that we were able to get the care my son needed so quickly. I am very thankful for the wonderful staff and facilities there.
